Job Description

Hospitalists provide comprehensive inpatient care for unaffiliated patients, including admission history and physical examination, daily medical management, participation in multidisciplinary rounds, family conferences as needed, and discharge planning. Other duties that the PCH hospitalist physician group provides include “stand by” coverage in the event of high patient census, and acute and targeted outpatient follow up of recently discharged hospitalist inpatients at the hospitalist post-discharge clinic.

Located in Prince Edward Island’s charming city, Summerside, the Prince County Hospital, a regional 110-bed hospital with specialty services in Internal Medicine, General Surgery, Anesthesia, Obstetrics/Gynecology, Pediatrics, and Psychiatry.

Hours of Work

  • The Hospitalist service runs a rotation of physicians, hospitalists in full-time positions generally provide 7-day coverage. Each physician works alternate weeks, covering up to 17 inpatients. Part-time opportunities are also available.

Remuneration

  • Hospitalists are paid a daily sessional rate and qualify for premiums for after hours, weekend and holiday work.
  • Weekend and holiday premiums are remunerated at the applicable rate plus an add-on premium of twenty-five percent (25%).
  • Overnight on-call coverage responsibilities are shared within the hospitalist group and remunerated by an on-call retainer plus fee for service model.

Certifications and Eligibility Requirements

  • Eligible for registration with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Prince Edward Island;
  • Eligible for certification with the College of Family Physicians of Canada;
  • Hold MCCQE Part I or Licentiate of Medical Council of Canada (LMCC) equivalent;
  • Membership with the Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA);
  • Appointment to the Health PEI Medical Staff and appropriate privileging;
  • Work experience preferable with at least 1- 2 years of clinical experience working in Canada.

Atlantic Registry

As of May 1, 2023, physicians whose primary practice is in Atlantic Canada (and hold a general registration in either PEI, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia or Newfoundland and Labrador) may be eligible to obtain registration to practice in all four Atlantic Canadian provinces via the Atlantic Registry.
